Viltrox Vintage Z1 Pro: Bringing a Little Retro Light to the Dark

Exploring a familiar space after dark has a quiet magic to it. Suddently, you start noticing tiny details in the everyday scenery just because you are paying closer attention. It was in this peaceful mood, armed with my Fujifilm X-E5, my X-E1, and the 35mm f/1.4 lens, that I spent an evening playing around with a new little tool: the Viltrox Vintage Z1 Pro flash.

A big thanks to the team at Viltrox for sending it over to try out. There was no complex plan or serious assignment here, just a fun, slow evening experimenting in the garden as the night rolled in.

Disclaimer: Viltrox sent me this flash to test out, but this review is completely independent. I haven't been paid, and all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

A beautiful object that just fits

If you know my style, you know how much I value the feeling of gear. I love tactile controls, simplicity, and that classic, mechanical look that makes the Fujifilm X series so enjoyable to shoot with. The Z1 Pro fits right into that philosophy. With its leather-textured finish, silver accents, and physical dials, it looks right at home on top of a compact camera.

At just 136 grams, it's tiny and light enough to slip into a pocket or leave mounted on the hot shoe without noticing it. It completely skips the bulky, intimidating feel of standard flash units and focuses purely on making the shooting experience fun.

Simple controls with a modern twist

Behind its vintage charm, the Z1 Pro has a very clever interface. The back features a round, smooth 2.5D touch screen. It's incredibly intuitive, you just swipe to jump between modes, check your battery life, or adjust the settings.

But the real highlight for me is the physical command dial. Being able to mechanically adjust your flash power while keeping that tactile connection to your gear is exactly how I like to shoot.

In the Garden: Soft Light and "Last Summer Roll"

For this quick night session, I wanted to keep things completely candid. I set up my X-E5 with Emanuele De Luca's Last Summer Roll film recipe. It's a warm, slightly faded look that I've been using heavily lately, and I wanted to see how it would handle artificial light.

The biggest risk with night flash is getting harsh, bright exposures that wash out the background and ruin the mood. The Z1 Pro handled it beautifully. Whether shooting in TTL auto or dropping into Manual mode (which goes from 1/1 down to 1/64), the light was remarkably soft and well-balanced.

Because the images are Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) JPEGs, I was thrilled to see that the flash didn't destroy the intimate, warm color palette of the recipe. It just gently lifted the subject out of the shadows. With a fast 1-second recycle time, it kept up perfectly with every spontaneous frame. Plus, having High-Speed Sync (HSS) up to 1/8000s means I'll be able to use it during the day to shoot wide open at f/1.4 even in bright sunlight.

The verdict

The Viltrox Vintage Z1 Pro is a genuine pleasure to use. For around €60-€70 you get the retro look, a body small enough to forget about, and the modern controls. If you shoot street or travel light and want to experiment with flash, it's hard to argue with at that price. It has earned its spot in my daily camera bag.
