PAL vs NTSC: What Actually Changes in Your VHS Look

A PAL tape and an NTSC tape do not look the same, and the difference is not subtle once you know what to look for. I grew up in France in the 90s. The tapes of my childhood, birthdays filmed on a camcorder, movies recorded off the TV, ran at 25 frames per second over 576 visible lines. Most VHS effects you can download emulate the American standard instead: 29.97 fps over 480 lines. When I first compared my own plugin against a real family tape, something felt wrong, and it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize the problem was the standard, not the effect.

PAL stands for Phase Alternating Line: the color signal flips its phase on every line, so a hue error on one line cancels against the next. NTSC keeps a fixed phase, so hue drifts with the signal, the cable, the weather. American televisions shipped with a tint knob for exactly this reason, and the standard earned the nickname "Never The Same Color". PAL sets never needed one.

What changes on screen

Line count sets the scale of every artifact. Scanlines, dot crawl along edges, the banding when tracking slips: all of it is drawn on the line grid. At 576 lines, the artifacts are finer and denser than at 480. Run a 480-line emulation on footage and a viewer who grew up with PAL feels that something is off without being able to name it. The detail dissolves at the wrong size.

Frame rate sets the motion. A 25 fps tape has a cadence you read instantly in pans and in the flicker of the image, and it shaped how a whole generation saw cinema: films shot at 24 fps were sped up to 25 for PAL broadcast, about 4 percent faster, with the audio pitched slightly up. NTSC countries got 3:2 pulldown instead, which keeps the speed but repeats fields in a pattern you can feel in slow camera moves.

Tape then flattened most of the sharpness difference anyway. VHS resolves roughly 240 TV lines of horizontal detail, with chroma far below that, so both standards smear color in the same way. What survives the trip to tape is the line structure and the frame rate. Which is exactly where PAL and NTSC differ.

The French exception

France never used PAL on the air. It broadcast in SECAM, a third standard that shares the 625-line, 25 fps skeleton with PAL but encodes color differently, sequentially instead of all at once. French VCRs recorded SECAM, later decks handled both, and tapes moved between systems without anyone paying attention. For the look, the color encoding barely matters. What matters is the skeleton: 576 lines, 25 fps.

Why this matters for your edit

If the tapes you remember are European, an NTSC-only emulation will always feel foreign in a way you cannot quite explain. The fix is literal: use the right line count, and cut on a timeline that matches. A PAL look belongs on a 25p timeline, an NTSC look on 29.97.

That is why version 2 of VHS Nostalgia added 576 lines (PAL) as a processing resolution, next to the original 480-line NTSC engine, and why the on-screen tape counter now follows your clip's real frame rate at 24, 25 or 30 fps. A PAL artifact grid under a 30 fps counter reads as fake the second you look twice.
